Lee Kuan Yew

Lee Kuan Yew (September 16, 1923 – March 23, 2015) was a Singaporean statesman and the founding Prime Minister of Singapore (1959-1990) who is widely credited with transforming Singapore into one of the world's most successful developed nations. Born in Singapore during the British colonial period, Lee was educated in English schools and studied law in London, where he became involved in anti-colonial politics. After returning to Singapore, he co-founded the People's Action Party and led Singapore toward independence from British rule, initially through merger with Malaya and eventually as an independent nation in 1965. As Prime Minister, Lee implemented pragmatic, authoritarian governance focused on economic development, meritocracy, and anti-corruption. Under his leadership, Singapore transformed from a colonial trading post into a gleaming global financial and technological hub, with one of the world's highest standards of living. His policies emphasized education, infrastructure development, and attracting foreign investment while maintaining strict social order and low corruption. Lee's approach to governance—combining economic liberalism with political authoritarianism—became influential in Asian development models. Internationally, he was respected as a shrewd diplomat and strategic thinker who positioned Singapore as a crucial player in geopolitics despite its small size.
