Kiri Te Kanawa

Dame Kiri Janette Te Kanawa (born 1944) is a New Zealand soprano who achieved international recognition as one of the most celebrated operatic voices of the late 20th century. Born in Gisborne, New Zealand, she discovered her remarkable vocal talents early and pursued formal training, eventually studying at the University of Auckland and later in London and Italy. Te Kanawa's operatic debut came in the 1960s, and her breakthrough to international prominence occurred in 1974 when she performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where she would become a regular featured performer. She became particularly renowned for her roles in Romantic operas, with her warm, lyrical soprano voice and elegant stage presence captivating audiences globally. Among her most celebrated performances was singing the national anthem at the Royal Wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana in 1981, which was broadcast to worldwide audiences and elevated her profile considerably. Throughout her career, she performed at the world's greatest opera houses including La Scala, Covent Garden, and the Vienna State Opera. Te Kanawa was appointed Dame Grand Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition of her contributions to music and New Zealand's cultural reputation.
