Kenneth Rexroth

Kenneth Charles Marion Rexroth (December 22, 1905 – June 6, 1982) was an American poet, translator, critic, and anarchist who played a pivotal role in the San Francisco literary renaissance of the 1950s and beyond. Born in Indiana and largely self-educated, Rexroth moved to San Francisco in the 1920s and became an integral part of avant-garde literary circles. He was instrumental in organizing the famous Six Gallery poetry reading in 1955, where Allen Ginsberg's "Howl" was first performed, marking a watershed moment in American poetry. Though sometimes associated with the Beat Generation, Rexroth maintained a distinct voice, combining accessible language with philosophical depth and political engagement. His prolific output included original poetry collections characterized by lyrical intensity and erotic openness, a radical departure from mainstream American poetry of his era. Rexroth was also an accomplished translator, bringing classical Chinese and Japanese poetry to English-speaking audiences with remarkable sensitivity and linguistic skill, making works like "One Hundred Poems from the Chinese" and "One Hundred Poems from the Japanese" widely accessible. Beyond literature, Rexroth was a committed pacifist and anarchist activist, using his platform to advocate for social justice and counter-cultural values. His critical essays on poetry and culture remain influential, and his translations helped shape Western appreciation of Asian literary traditions.
