Keir Rodney Starmer (born September 2, 1962) is a British politician and barrister who became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in July 2024, leading the Labour Party to victory in the general election. Born in London to a toolmaker father and a nurse mother, Starmer studied law at Leeds University and Oxford University before becoming a barrister specializing in human rights law. He served as Director of Public Prosecutions and Head of the Crown Prosecution Service from 2013 to 2018, overseeing significant criminal cases and prosecutions. Entering Parliament in 2015, he rose through Labour's ranks, serving as Shadow Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union and later becoming party leader in 2020. Starmer modernized Labour's platform and rebuilt the party's reputation after internal turmoil, focusing on economic growth, the NHS, and social justice.
