Katherine Johnson

Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson (August 26, 1918 – February 24, 2020) was an African-American mathematician whose groundbreaking work in orbital mechanics and calculations was essential to NASA's successful space missions during the Space Race. Born in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, Johnson demonstrated exceptional mathematical talent from childhood, entering high school at age 10. She earned degrees in mathematics and French from West Virginia State University and initially taught mathematics before joining NASA's predecessor organization, NACA, in 1953. Working in the segregated environment of NASA's Langley Research Center in Virginia during the civil rights era, Johnson performed complex mathematical calculations for aircraft trajectories and spacecraft orbits, often with greater accuracy than the earliest computers. Her calculations were critical to the success of Project Mercury and the Apollo missions, including the 1962 orbital flight of John Glenn. Despite facing racial segregation and gender discrimination—working in a segregated computing unit while being excluded from many facilities—Johnson persisted and earned recognition for her precision and competence. Her story gained widespread attention following the 2016 film 'Hidden Figures,' which highlighted her contributions and those of other African-American women mathematicians. Johnson received numerous honors, including NASA's Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015. Her life exemplifies the triumph of talent, determination, and integrity over systemic discrimination.
