Justin Martyr

Early Christian apologist, philosopher, martyr saint

Biography

Justin Martyr (c. 100–165 AD) was an early Christian philosopher and apologist whose writings defending Christian faith against philosophical and legal attacks were among the earliest systematic defenses of Christianity. Born in Nablus in Roman Palestine (modern-day West Bank), Justin received a Greek education and initially studied various philosophical schools including Stoicism and Platonism before converting to Christianity. Following his conversion, Justin became a prominent defender of Christian doctrine, writing influential works including the 'First Apology' (c. 155 AD) and 'Second Apology' (c. 160 AD), which he addressed to Roman authorities. These works defended Christianity against charges of atheism and immorality, arguing that Christian philosophy was consistent with reason and truth. Justin's 'Dialogue with Trypho' engaged critically with Jewish theology, representing some of the earliest Christian-Jewish theological debates. His approach combined Greek philosophical terminology with Christian doctrine, helping to establish frameworks for Christian intellectual engagement. Justin was martyred during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, and his name 'Martyr' reflects his death for Christian faith. His writings survived and profoundly influenced Christian theology. Justin's legacy as an early defender of Christianity and martyr for the faith established him as a saint in Christian tradition.
