Jubal Early

Jubal Anderson Early (November 3, 1816 – March 2, 1894) was a prominent Confederate general during the American Civil War, remembered for his tactical audacity and controversial military campaigns. Born in Franklin County, Virginia, Early graduated from West Point in 1837 and served in the Mexican-American War before joining the Confederacy. He gained recognition for his role in the Shenandoah Valley campaigns and achieved notoriety for his bold June-July 1864 raid on Washington, D.C., which briefly threatened the Union capital and demonstrated the Confederacy's continued military threat despite mounting defeats. His aggressive leadership style made him both admired by Confederate forces and feared by Union commanders. Though he was ultimately defeated at the Third Battle of Winchester in September 1864, Early's campaigns showcased strategic brilliance even in the face of overwhelming odds. After the war, he became a controversial figure in Lost Cause historiography, writing memoirs that shaped post-war Confederate narratives. Early died in 1894, his legacy remaining complex and contested.
