Jovenel Moïse
President of Haiti, 2017-2021
Jovenel Moïse (June 26, 1968 – July 7, 2021) was a Haitian businessman and politician who served as President of Haiti from February 2017 until his assassination in July 2021. Born in Port-Margot, Moïse initially worked in agriculture and agribusiness before transitioning into politics. He ran for president in 2016 as a candidate of the Party of Haitian Awakening (PHTK) and won the election, taking office in February 2017. During his presidency, Moïse faced widespread protests over fuel price increases, economic deterioration, gang violence, and accusations of government corruption. He attempted to strengthen Haiti's institutions and reduce gang violence, but his efforts were hampered by political instability and international pressure. In July 2021, gunmen stormed his residence in Port-au-Prince, assassinating him and wounding his wife. His death shocked the nation and intensified political chaos in Haiti. The circumstances surrounding his assassination remain partially unclear, with investigations pointing to involvement by various criminal groups and former security officials.
