Joseph Joffre

French Marshal, Supreme Commander WWI, victor at Battle of the Marne

Biography

Joseph Jacques Césaire Joffre (January 12, 1852 – January 3, 1931) was a French military officer who rose to prominence as the Supreme Commander of the French Armies during World War I. Born in Rivesaltes in southwestern France, Joffre began his military career as an engineer officer and served in various colonial campaigns across Africa and Indochina before achieving prominence in the early 20th century. His finest hour came in September 1914 during the Battle of the Marne, where his strategic coordination of French and British forces halted the German advance toward Paris, fundamentally altering the course of the war. Though later campaigns proved less successful and he was eventually removed from supreme command in 1916, Joffre's decisive action at the Marne saved France from early defeat. He was created a Marshal of France in recognition of his service and remained a revered figure in French national memory. His legacy embodies French military tradition and the strategic thinking that preserved the nation during its darkest hour.
