Joseph Bonaparte

King of Naples and Spain, brother of Napoleon

Biography

Joseph Bonaparte (January 7, 1768 – July 28, 1844) was the eldest brother of Napoleon Bonaparte and a prominent figure during the Napoleonic Wars. Born in Ajaccio, Corsica, Joseph pursued a diplomatic and military career, serving as a deputy in the French National Assembly and later as a general in the French army. Napoleon appointed him King of Naples in 1806, a position he held until 1808, after which he became King of Spain from 1808 to 1813. As King of Spain, Joseph faced constant resistance from Spanish nationalists and guerrilla fighters, making his reign tumultuous and ultimately unsuccessful. Unlike his brother, Joseph was known for a more moderate temperament and diplomatic inclinations, though he largely served as a figurehead for Napoleonic imperial expansion. Following Napoleon's downfall and exile, Joseph also fled Europe, eventually settling in the United States for several years before returning to Europe. He spent his final years in exile in Florence, Italy. Joseph's legacy is often overshadowed by his brother's, yet he represents an important chapter in early 19th-century European history and the complexities of Napoleonic family politics.
