John Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh

Nobel Prize winner, discovered argon, contributions to optics and acoustics

Biography

John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh (1842–1919), was a British physicist and Nobel laureate who made profound contributions to multiple fields of physics. Born into aristocracy, he inherited his title in 1873 and served as the second Director of the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University, succeeding James Clerk Maxwell. Rayleigh's most celebrated achievement was the discovery of argon, an inert gas comprising about 1% of Earth's atmosphere, for which he shared the 1904 Nobel Prize in Physics with chemist William Ramsay. Beyond this landmark discovery, Rayleigh conducted pioneering research in optics, acoustics, and electromagnetism. His work on the scattering of light (Rayleigh scattering) explains why the sky appears blue and laid the foundation for understanding light-matter interactions. He also made crucial contributions to understanding sound waves and vibrations. His textbook "The Theory of Sound" remains influential. Rayleigh's legacy extends beyond specific discoveries—he embodied the ideal of the natural philosopher, combining rigorous mathematical theory with experimental verification. His name remains attached to fundamental physical concepts and phenomena studied in universities worldwide.

American origin

A sophisticated feminine form of Ray with the -leigh ending, a more literary and upscale spelling than Raylee. The -leigh suffix carries associations with English pastoral and romantic traditions, found in place names and period literature. Rayleigh appeals to parents seeking something elegant and classically-inflected while remaining contemporary and distinctive.
