Joseph A. Henderson (1937–2001) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist and composer widely regarded as one of the most important and influential saxophonists in jazz history. Born in Lima, Ohio, Henderson developed a distinctive tenor saxophone voice characterized by harmonic sophistication, emotional depth, and virtuosic technical ability. He worked with many of the greatest jazz musicians, including Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and McCoy Tyner, and recorded over 100 albums as a leader and numerous sideman appearances. Henderson's improvisational style bridged hard bop, modal jazz, and free jazz, allowing him to remain relevant and artistically vital throughout changing jazz trends.
