Jethro Tull

Jethro Tull (1664–1741) was an English agricultural pioneer and inventor whose innovations fundamentally transformed farming practices in the 18th century. Born in Berkshire, Tull initially trained as a lawyer but became deeply interested in improving agricultural efficiency after inheriting his father's estate. His most significant invention was the seed drill, patented in 1701, which mechanically sowed seeds in neat rows at controlled depths, replacing the wasteful practice of broadcasting seeds by hand. He also developed the horse-drawn hoe, which allowed farmers to cultivate crops more efficiently and reduce weeds without damaging plants. These innovations increased crop yields substantially and reduced labor costs, laying the foundation for the agricultural revolution. Tull's experiments with soil structure and crop rotation were ahead of his time, though some of his theories about plant nutrition were later disproven. His work was documented in his influential book 'The Horse-Hoeing Husbandry,' which inspired agricultural reforms across Europe. Tull died in obscurity but is now recognized as one of the most important figures in agricultural history, having fundamentally changed how humans cultivate food.
