Jackie Robinson

Jack Roosevelt Robinson (January 31, 1919 – October 24, 1972) was an American professional baseball player who became the first African American to play in Major League Baseball in the modern era when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Born in Cairo, Georgia, Robinson excelled at athletics from youth and attended UCLA, where he was a standout in multiple sports. His entry into MLB, facilitated by Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey, was a watershed moment for American civil rights. Despite facing severe racial discrimination, abuse from opposing players and fans, and the pressure of representing his race, Robinson maintained extraordinary composure and exceptional performance on the field. He won the National League Rookie of the Year award and was a six-time All-Star, helping the Dodgers win the 1955 World Series. Robinson's success demonstrated the absurdity of racial segregation and inspired millions. After retiring from baseball, he remained active in civil rights activism and business ventures.
