Isabella of Castile

Isabella I of Castile (1451-1504), known as 'Isabella the Catholic,' was one of the most powerful and influential monarchs of medieval Europe. Born in Madrigal de las Altas Torres, Spain, Isabella became Queen of Castile in 1474 and married Ferdinand II of Aragon in 1469, effectively unifying the Spanish kingdoms. Together, they completed the Reconquista by conquering Granada in 1492, ending nearly 800 years of Muslim rule in Iberia. That same year, Isabella made the pivotal decision to sponsor Christopher Columbus's expedition across the Atlantic Ocean, which led to European contact with the Americas and fundamentally altered world history. She was a devout Catholic who established the Spanish Inquisition and worked to consolidate royal power and religious unity in her realm. Isabella was also a patroness of the arts and education, supporting scholars and artists throughout her reign. Her legacy extends far beyond Spain; she is remembered as a transformative figure whose decisions shaped the course of world exploration, colonization, and history. She remains a controversial figure, celebrated for her political acumen yet criticized for her religious intolerance.
