Inga Swenson

Inga Swenson (December 29, 1932 – October 8, 2023) was a Swedish-American actress and singer who became an iconic figure in American musical theater. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, to Swedish immigrant parents, Swenson trained at the University of Nebraska and later in New York. She achieved stardom when she originated the role of Gretchen in Rodgers and Hammerstein's 'The Sound of Music' on Broadway, earning a Tony Award nomination for her stunning vocal performance. Her portrayal helped establish the show as one of the most beloved musicals in theater history. Beyond Broadway, Swenson had a prolific television career, appearing in numerous series and made-for-TV movies throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Her warm contralto voice and graceful stage presence made her a beloved performer across generations.
