Ignacio Ellacuría

Ignacio Ellacuría (1930-1989) was a Spanish-born Salvadoran Jesuit priest, theologian, and philosopher who became one of the most influential intellectuals of his time. Ordained as a priest in 1958, he devoted his life to advancing liberation theology—a movement emphasizing Christian engagement with social justice and the poor. As rector of the Central American University in San Salvador, Ellacuría transformed the institution into a beacon of critical thought and social advocacy in a nation torn by civil war. His writings and teachings challenged the Salvadoran military regime and landholding elites, advocating fiercely for the rights of the poor and marginalized. He became increasingly vocal about human rights abuses and military violence, earning him both admiration and enmity. On November 16, 1989, Ellacuría and nine others—including six fellow Jesuits—were murdered by a military death squad in one of El Salvador's most notorious war crimes. His assassination shocked the international community and exposed the brutality of the conflict. Today, Ellacuría is remembered as a martyr for social justice and a prophetic voice for the voiceless, his legacy inspiring ongoing movements for human rights and theological reflection on social responsibility.
