Ida Tarbell

Ida Minerva Tarbell (November 5, 1857 – January 6, 1944) was an American investigative journalist whose fearless reporting on corporate monopolies helped define the muckraking era and modern investigative journalism. Born in Pennsylvania, Tarbell studied biology and later attended the Sorbonne in Paris, eventually establishing herself as a writer for McClure's Magazine. Her most famous work, 'The History of the Standard Oil Company' (serialized 1902-1904), was a meticulously researched investigation into John D. Rockefeller's business practices and the monopolistic tactics employed by Standard Oil. This groundbreaking series exposed the corrupt and illegal methods used to build the oil trust, directly contributing to the U.S. Supreme Court's 1911 decision to dissolve Standard Oil under antitrust laws. Tarbell's methodical approach to investigative journalism—combining thorough research, interviews, and documentary evidence—established standards for the field that persist today.
