Hyrum Smith

LDS apostle, brother of Joseph Smith, early Mormon leader

Biography

Hyrum Smith (February 9, 1800 – June 27, 1844) was an American religious leader and the elder brother of Joseph Smith, founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Born in Vermont to a farming family, Hyrum became one of the earliest and most dedicated followers of his brother's religious movement. He served as an apostle and held numerous leadership positions within the Church, including patriarch. Hyrum was present at pivotal moments in Mormon history, including the founding of Kirtland, Ohio, and the gathering in Missouri, experiencing the persecution and conflict that characterized early Mormon communities. He was known for his loyalty to Joseph and his role as a stabilizing force within the church hierarchy. In 1844, during increasing tensions with non-Mormon residents of Carthage, Illinois, Hyrum and Joseph were imprisoned in Carthage Jail on charges of treason. On June 27, 1844, an angry mob stormed the jail and fatally shot both brothers. Hyrum's death alongside Joseph became a foundational martyrdom narrative in LDS Church history, cementing both brothers as central figures in Mormon theology and identity. His legacy remains deeply significant to millions of Latter-day Saints worldwide.
