Huber Matos

Huber Matos (May 27, 1918 – May 28, 2014) was a Cuban military officer and revolutionary figure who played a significant role in overthrowing Fulgencio Batista's regime during the Cuban Revolution of 1959. Initially an ally and close confidant of Fidel Castro, Matos served as commander of the La Cabaña fortress in Havana following the revolution's triumph. However, as Castro increasingly moved toward communism and Soviet alignment, Matos grew disillusioned with the revolutionary direction. In October 1959, he publicly resigned from his military position and wrote an open letter criticizing Castro's communist policies. This act of defiance led to his arrest on charges of treason; he was court-martialed and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. After his release in 1979, Matos went into exile in the United States, where he remained a vocal critic of the Castro regime and became an influential figure in the Cuban-American community. His memoir and interviews documented the early days of the revolution and his ideological break with Castro. Matos's life exemplifies the complex history of the Cuban Revolution and the tragic personal costs of political conviction.
