Howard Zinn
Historian and activist, author of 'A People's History of the United States'
Howard Zinn (August 24, 1922 – January 27, 2010) was an American historian, playwright, and political activist best known for his influential work 'A People's History of the United States,' published in 1980. Unlike traditional histories centered on presidents and military campaigns, Zinn's work emphasized the experiences of ordinary people, including Native Americans, enslaved people, workers, and women, providing a grassroots perspective on American history. A former Air Force bombardier who became disillusioned with war, Zinn brought his activist commitments to his scholarship and writing. He was a professor of history at Boston University for decades and lectured extensively on American history and political activism. Beyond his historical work, Zinn was a prolific playwright whose theatrical works addressed social justice themes. His approach to history emphasized critical analysis of power structures and challenged dominant historical narratives. 'A People's History of the United States' has become widely adopted in educational settings and remains an important resource for understanding American history from alternative perspectives. Zinn's legacy continues to influence historians, educators, and activists, representing a model of engaged scholarship committed to social change.

Thinking about the name
Howard
English origin
“Derived from the Old English elements 'hoh' (high) and 'weard' (guardian), Howard literally means 'high guardian' or 'chief guardian.' This Old English name was reinforced by Norman influence and became prominent among English nobility, suggesting authority, protection, and leadership. Howard has remained a steady, dignified choice across English-speaking cultures.”
