Hjalmer Schacht

Reichsbank president, Nazi financial architect, economist

Biography

Hjalmer Schacht (January 22, 1877 – June 3, 1970) was a prominent German economist, banker, and politician who wielded significant influence over German economic policy during the 1920s and 1930s. Schacht first gained prominence by helping stabilize the German economy during the hyperinflation crisis of 1923 through his introduction of the Rentenmark. As President of the Reichsbank from 1933 to 1939, he orchestrated the financial machinery that enabled Nazi Germany's massive rearmament program, earning the nickname 'Magician of Finance' for his innovative if controversial economic strategies. Though initially supporting Hitler's rise to power, Schacht later became critical of the regime's economic policies and participated in resistance circles. After World War II, he was tried at the Nuremberg Trials but acquitted, subsequently becoming a controversial figure in economic and historical discussions. His complex legacy remains debated among historians, representing both technical financial brilliance and complicity in one of history's darkest chapters.
