Hiram Powers

Hiram Powers (July 6, 1805 – June 27, 1873) was an American neoclassical sculptor who achieved international fame during the 19th century. Born in Vermont, Powers developed his artistic talents as a young man and eventually moved to Italy, where he established himself as a leading neoclassical sculptor. His most famous work, 'The Greek Slave' (1843), became one of the most celebrated sculptures of the 19th century, depicting a Greek woman enslaved during the Greco-Turkish War. The work achieved both critical and popular acclaim, with copies displayed throughout the United States and Europe. Powers created numerous other notable sculptures, including portrait busts of prominent Americans and historical figures. His work embodied the neoclassical ideals of beauty, virtue, and noble subject matter that defined his era's artistic aesthetic. Beyond his artistic achievements, Powers was known for his technical mastery of marble carving and his philosophical approach to sculpture. He spent much of his career in Florence, Italy, where he maintained a studio and continued to produce works that influenced American and European sculptural traditions. Powers' legacy helped establish American sculpture as a significant force in the international art world.
