Hernando Cortés

Hernando Cortés (1485–1547) was a Spanish conquistador whose military campaigns resulted in the conquest of the Aztec Empire and the establishment of Spanish colonial rule in Mexico. Born in Medellín, Extremadura, Cortés initially sought his fortune in the Caribbean before being appointed to lead an expedition to Mexico in 1519. With a force of approximately 600 men, horses, and artillery, he exploited internal divisions within the Aztec Empire, formed alliances with indigenous groups opposed to Aztec rule, and demonstrated tactical brilliance in siege warfare. The fall of Tenochtitlan in 1521 marked the collapse of Aztec power and the beginning of Spanish dominion over Mexico. Cortés became the first governor of New Spain and accumulated vast wealth and land grants, though his power eventually declined as the Spanish Crown reasserted direct control. His conquest had catastrophic consequences for indigenous populations, decimating them through warfare and disease. Cortés returned to Spain in 1540 but never regained his former influence. His legacy remains deeply contentious—celebrated by some as a bold military commander and by others as emblematic of colonial exploitation and cultural destruction.
