Henry Ford

Henry Ford (July 30, 1863 – April 7, 1947) was an American industrialist and entrepreneur whose innovations in manufacturing fundamentally transformed the automobile industry and modern production methods. Born in Michigan, Ford began his career as an engineer before founding the Ford Motor Company in 1903. His revolutionary contribution was not inventing the automobile—that credit belongs to others—but perfecting mass production through the assembly line. By implementing conveyor belt manufacturing and standardized, interchangeable parts, Ford dramatically reduced production time and costs for the Model T, introduced in 1908. This innovation made automobiles affordable for middle-class Americans, democratizing personal transportation. At its peak, the Model T represented nearly 50% of all vehicles sold in America. Ford's manufacturing principles, known as "Fordism," became the global standard for industrial production and influenced manufacturing across all industries. He also pioneered high wages for workers, famously paying the "five-dollar day" to reduce turnover, though this reflected pragmatic business sense alongside paternalism. Ford's legacy includes transforming the American economy, enabling suburban expansion, and establishing production methods that dominated industry for decades. However, his later years were marked by controversial views on labor and other matters.
