Hendrik Goltzius

Hendrik Goltzius (August 5, 1558 – January 17, 1617) was a celebrated Flemish-Dutch engraver, printmaker, and painter of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods who became one of the most respected and accomplished artists of Northern Europe. Born in Mühlbrecht, Goltzius was trained by his father, Hubert, in printmaking and quickly surpassed his mentor to become Europe's most sought-after engraver. His technical mastery was legendary—his engravings demonstrated unprecedented skill in line work, perspective, and rendering of human anatomy and drapery. Goltzius's works were sought by collectors throughout Europe and served as models for aspiring artists. Beyond printmaking, he was an accomplished painter and draftsman, and his later works showed the influence of his travels to Italy, where he studied classical art and contemporary masters. He also worked as a publisher and businessman, overseeing a productive workshop.
