Harland Svare
NFL linebacker and head coach of the Los Angeles Rams and San Diego Chargers
Harland Svare (March 28, 1930 – August 16, 2013) was an American professional football player and coach. As a player, Svare earned recognition as a defensive standout, playing linebacker and defensive back in the NFL during the 1950s and early 1960s. His intelligence and tactical acumen translated well to coaching, where he became head coach of the Los Angeles Rams from 1962 to 1971, compiling a 54-83-5 record during a period of transition for the franchise. He later coached the San Diego Chargers from 1973 to 1974. Throughout his football career, both as player and coach, Svare was known for his defensive expertise and leadership qualities. Though his head coaching record was not exceptionally successful, he was respected in the coaching community for his football knowledge and professionalism. Svare's career spans an important era in professional football history, bridging the gap between the NFL's early decades and its modern expansion era.
