Hannah Höch

Hannah Höch (1889-1978) was a German Dada artist and pioneer of photomontage who became one of the most innovative and influential visual artists of the 20th century. Born in Gotha, Germany, Höch initially pursued textile design before moving to Berlin, where she became central to the Berlin Dada movement of the 1920s. She developed the technique of photomontage—cutting and reassembling photographs and printed images—to create layered, often surreal compositions that challenged perceptions of reality and questioned traditional notions of art. Her works often addressed themes of gender, identity, technology, and politics, incorporating elements of popular culture, advertisements, and photography. Höch's art reflected the fragmentation and chaos of post-World War I Germany while simultaneously anticipating concerns of contemporary visual culture. Despite her revolutionary contributions, Höch remained largely overshadowed by her male contemporaries until late in her career. The Nazi regime banned her work as 'degenerate art,' forcing her into obscurity during the Third Reich. After World War II, her reputation was gradually restored, and she is now recognized as a master innovator whose techniques influenced generations of artists.
