Hanna Schygulla
New German Cinema actress, Fassbinder collaborator, singer
Hanna Schygulla (born December 25, 1943) is a German-Italian actress and singer who became one of the most prominent figures of New German Cinema. Born in Königshütte, Upper Silesia, she began her career in theater before meeting director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, with whom she would collaborate on numerous acclaimed films including 'The Marriage of Maria Braun,' 'Lola,' and 'Veronika Voss.' Beyond cinema, Schygulla pursued a successful singing career, performing in multiple languages across Europe. Her work in the 1970s and 1980s established her as an international star, and she received numerous awards including a Golden Globe and a Cannes Award. Despite working extensively in film, she maintained her artistic independence and continued to select challenging, unconventional roles throughout her career, cementing her legacy as a transformative figure in European cinema.

Thinking about the name
Hanna
Hebrew origin
“A shortened, more modern spelling of Hannah, derived from the Hebrew 'Channah,' meaning 'grace' or 'favor.' Hanna simplifies the traditional double-n while maintaining the name's timeless elegance and biblical heritage. It strikes a balance between classic and contemporary.”
