Grover Cleveland

Stephen Grover Cleveland (March 18, 1837 – June 24, 1908) was an American politician and lawyer who served as the 22nd and 24th President of the United States, making him the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms. Born in New Jersey and raised in New York, Cleveland built a reputation as a reformer dedicated to eliminating political corruption and patronage. Before his presidency, he served as mayor of Buffalo and governor of New York, where he earned respect for his fiscal conservatism and principled stands against machine politics. His first presidency (1885-1889) focused on tariff reform and ending corrupt land grants, though it ended with his defeat by Benjamin Harrison. During his second presidency (1893-1897), Cleveland faced the severe Panic of 1893 and an economic depression; he managed the crisis with controversial decisions including repaying the gold reserve and breaking the Pullman Strike. Though unpopular during his presidency, Cleveland is remembered by historians as an honest, courageous leader who prioritized principle over politics. His commitment to constitutional limits on executive power and fiscal responsibility became a model for reform-minded politicians. Cleveland's legacy reflects the tension between democratic politics and good governance—he remains the only president to leave office and return to it.
