Gregor Mendel

Gregor Mendel (July 20, 1822 – January 6, 1884) was an Augustinian friar and scientist who conducted groundbreaking experiments on pea plants that established the mathematical foundations of heredity. Through careful observation and statistical analysis of traits like seed color, plant height, and pod shape across generations of pea plants, Mendel discovered the fundamental principles of inheritance that would later be formalized as Mendel's Laws of Inheritance. His work demonstrated that traits are inherited through discrete units (now understood as genes) that follow predictable patterns of dominance and segregation. Published in 1866, his research was largely overlooked during his lifetime, but was rediscovered around 1900 by three independent scientists, launching the modern science of genetics. Mendel's meticulous experimental methodology and mathematical approach to biological problems were revolutionary for his era and established him as a pioneer of scientific inquiry. Though he spent most of his life in relative obscurity at St. Thomas Abbey in Brno (now Czech Republic), his legacy as the 'father of genetics' fundamentally transformed biological science and laid the groundwork for understanding evolution, medicine, and agriculture. His work remains central to modern molecular biology and genetics education worldwide.
