Gregor MacGregor
Adventurer, the 'Cazique of Poyais,' attempted Central American colonization
Gregor MacGregor (1786–1845) was a Scottish military officer, adventurer, and con artist who became one of history's most colorful figures. After serving in the Napoleonic Wars and participating in various military campaigns across South America, MacGregor turned his attention to establishing what he claimed was an independent state called Poyais in Central America (in present-day Honduras). Calling himself the 'Cazique of Poyais,' he even issued currency, created an elaborate flag and coat of arms, and produced impressive maps and promotional materials. In 1822-1823, he convinced over 250 Scottish and English settlers to emigrate to this 'paradise,' selling them land and titles. When the settlers arrived, they discovered the country was largely fictional—populated by indigenous peoples with no European settlement or infrastructure. The venture was a spectacular failure and disaster for the colonists, though MacGregor himself escaped with considerable profit. He later attempted similar schemes in other parts of Central America and served as governor of the Isla de Roatán off Honduras. His story has become the stuff of legend, representing both the adventurous spirit and the duplicitous schemes that characterized the colonial era.
