Gregory Efthimios Louganis (born January 29, 1960) is an American Olympic diver and gay rights activist who revolutionized the sport of diving through his technical excellence and artistic performance. He won four Olympic gold medals—two in platform diving and two in springboard diving—across the 1984 Los Angeles and 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, establishing himself as one of the greatest divers of all time. Known for his grace, precision, and innovative techniques, Louganis set numerous world records and won multiple national and international championships throughout the 1980s. Beyond his athletic achievements, Louganis became a pioneering figure in LGBTQ+ history when he publicly disclosed his HIV-positive status in 1995, making him one of the first prominent athletes to do so. His courage in coming out and his subsequent activism have made him an inspirational figure for the LGBTQ+ community and those affected by HIV/AIDS. After retiring from competitive diving, Louganis has worked as a coach, choreographer, and motivational speaker, continuing to impact lives through his visibility and advocacy.

Thinking about the name
Greg
Greek origin
“A straightforward short form of Gregory, derived from the Greek Gregorios, meaning 'watchful' or 'vigilant.' Greg epitomizes the accessible American nickname that became a standalone name, popular in the mid-20th century for its unpretentious charm and everyman quality.”
