Grace Brewster Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906 – January 1, 1992) was an American computer scientist, systems analyst, and U.S. Navy rear admiral who made groundbreaking contributions to computer programming. During World War II, she joined the Naval Reserve and worked on the Mark I computer at Harvard University, becoming one of the first computer programmers. Hopper is best known for developing the first compiler, which translated written instructions into computer code, a revolutionary innovation that made programming more accessible. She was instrumental in the development of COBOL (Common Business-Oriented Language), one of the first high-level programming languages, which became widely used in business and government systems. Her famous quote, 'It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission,' encapsulates her innovative and bold approach to problem-solving. Hopper remained active in the Navy until her retirement in 1986 at age 80, continuing to advocate for technological advancement and education.
