Gloria Estefan
Singer, Miami Sound Machine, Latin crossover pioneer
Gloria María Milagrosa Fajardo García, known professionally as Gloria Estefan (born 1957), is a Cuban-American singer, songwriter, actress, and businesswoman who became one of the most commercially successful and influential Latin American artists in popular music history. Born in Havana, Cuba, Estefan's family emigrated to Miami in 1966, where she later joined the band Miami Sound Machine as a vocalist. Her distinctive husky voice and charismatic stage presence combined with the band's innovative fusion of Latin rhythms with pop and dance elements created a new sound that crossed cultural and linguistic boundaries. With hits like 'Conga,' 'Rhythm Is Gonna Get You,' and solo hits 'Come On Eileen' and 'Here We Are,' Estefan achieved unprecedented success bringing Latin music to mainstream international audiences during the 1980s and 1990s. In 1990, a severe tour bus accident nearly ended her career, but through remarkable determination and rehabilitation, she returned to performing. Beyond music, Estefan has acted in films, produced television content, and built a successful business empire. She became an advocate for Latino representation in entertainment and philanthropy. Estefan's legacy demonstrates the power of cultural bridge-building through music and her lasting influence on how Latin music is understood and celebrated globally.

Thinking about the name
Gloria
Latin origin
“Derived from the Latin 'gloria,' meaning 'glory' or 'fame,' Gloria emerged as a given name through Christian liturgical use (Gloria in excelsis deo—'Glory to God'). The name was particularly embraced in the 20th century as both a virtuous quality name and as a bold, confident choice for strong women.”
