Gilberto Rodríguez Orejuela
Co-founder of the Cali Cartel, major drug trafficker of the 1980s-1990s
Gilberto Rodríguez Orejuela (January 30, 1939 – June 31, 2023) was a Colombian criminal and drug trafficker who, alongside his brother Miguel, built the Cali Cartel into one of the most powerful and sophisticated drug trafficking organizations in history. Operating primarily during the 1980s and 1990s, the Cali Cartel controlled an estimated 80% of the world's cocaine supply at its peak, generating billions in revenue. Unlike the more violent Medellín Cartel led by Pablo Escobar, the Cali organization employed a more businesslike approach, investing in legitimate enterprises and maintaining lower profiles. Gilberto served as the intellectual architect of the cartel's operations, overseeing logistics, distribution networks, and money laundering schemes. The cartel's influence extended across continents, corrupting government officials and law enforcement. Following intense pressure from the DEA and Colombian authorities, Gilberto was captured in 1995. He was extradited to the United States in 2004 and served time in federal prison until his death. His criminal legacy represents one of the darkest chapters in drug trafficking history.
