Geraldo Rivera
Television journalist and talk show host; investigative reporter and media personality
Geraldo Rivera (born July 4, 1943) is an American television personality, journalist, and attorney who became one of the most recognizable media figures of the late 20th century. Born Gerald Riviera in New York City to a Puerto Rican father and Jewish mother, he initially pursued a law degree before transitioning to journalism. Rivera gained prominence as an investigative reporter, winning a Peabody Award for his work exposing conditions at the Willowbrook State School. His daytime talk show "Geraldo!" (1987-1998) became infamous for its sensational topics and confrontational style, frequently featuring dramatic confrontations between guests. Despite criticism for prioritizing ratings over journalistic integrity, Rivera maintained a significant media presence, appearing as a war correspondent, news analyst, and commentator. He became particularly known for his coverage of Middle Eastern conflicts and his conservative political commentary on Fox News. His legacy remains complex—recognized for breaking taboos in television discussion while also being criticized for exploitative sensationalism.
