Chaim Witz, known professionally as Gene Simmons (born August 25, 1949), is an American bassist, singer, and co-founder of the legendary rock band Kiss. Born in Haifa, Israel, and immigrating to the United States as a young child, Simmons grew up in New York City where he developed a passion for rock music. In 1973, he co-founded Kiss with Paul Stanley, bringing a theatrical, glam-rock aesthetic to hard rock music that fundamentally changed the genre. Simmons' stage persona—complete with elaborate demon makeup, black clothing, and his signature tongue—became one of rock's most iconic images.
