Gary Kasparov
Chess grandmaster, World Chess Champion, Deep Blue competitor, political activist
Garry Kimovich Kasparov (born March 13, 1963) is a Russian chess grandmaster, former World Chess Champion, and political activist who is widely regarded as the greatest chess player of all time by many experts. Born in Baku, Kasparov demonstrated exceptional talent from childhood and became the youngest undisputed World Chess Champion at age 22 in 1985. He held the title for 15 years, longer than any other champion of the modern era, and achieved the highest Elo rating ever recorded at the time. Kasparov's aggressive playing style and innovative approach revolutionized chess strategy and popularized the game globally. His matches against Anatoly Karpov in the 1980s remain legendary in chess history, as do his games against other grandmasters. In 1997, his match against IBM's Deep Blue computer captured worldwide attention and marked a watershed moment in artificial intelligence. After retiring from professional chess in 2000, Kasparov became increasingly involved in Russian politics and human rights activism, often criticizing the Putin government. He has written extensively about chess, history, and politics. Kasparov's intellectual impact extends far beyond chess, influencing discussions about human creativity, artificial intelligence, and political freedom.

Thinking about the name
Gary
Germanic origin
“Derived from Germanic roots meaning 'spear' or 'warrior,' Gary became wildly popular in mid-20th century America as a friendly, approachable short form. The name rose to prominence partly due to actor Gary Cooper, lending it both Hollywood glamour and everyman accessibility.”
