Garret Hobart

24th U.S. Vice President under William McKinley; New Jersey lawyer and businessman

Biography

Garrett Augustus Hobart (June 3, 1844 – November 21, 1899) was an American lawyer, businessman, and politician who served as the 24th Vice President of the United States under President William McKinley. Born in Long Branch, New Jersey, Hobart established himself as a successful attorney and railroad executive before entering politics. He served in the New Jersey General Assembly and as Speaker of the New Jersey House of Representatives, earning a reputation for sound judgment and legal expertise. Selected as McKinley's running mate in 1896, Hobart became Vice President following a successful presidential campaign. Unlike many Vice Presidents of the era, Hobart maintained an unusually active and influential role in McKinley's administration, meeting regularly with the President and contributing to policy discussions. He was particularly involved in discussions surrounding the Spanish-American War and the subsequent expansion of American influence in the Caribbean and Pacific. Hobart was also known for his extensive business interests and significant wealth, making him one of the wealthier Vice Presidents in American history. His health declined in his second year of office, and he died in office on November 21, 1899, before the end of McKinley's first term. Despite his relatively short tenure, Hobart is remembered as a capable and engaged Vice President who influenced policy during a pivotal period in American history.

Germanic origin

The classic single-t spelling of Garrett, Garret is the traditional form that appears throughout English historical records and literature. This variant is substantive, authoritative, and carries all the weight of Germanic 'gar' (spear) heritage without the modern double-t formality. It suits parents wanting classic credibility with a slightly less common spelling.
