Gabe Newell

Gabe Logan Newell (born November 3, 1962) is an American computer programmer and entrepreneur who co-founded Valve Corporation and serves as its president. Beginning his career at Microsoft, where he worked on the Windows operating system, Newell transitioned to game development and co-founded Valve in 1996 with Mike Harrington. Valve gained prominence through landmark game releases including "Half-Life" (1998) and "Counter-Strike," which became defining titles in first-person shooter gaming. However, Newell's most significant contribution to the gaming industry came through his vision for digital distribution: Steam, launched in 2003. Steam revolutionized how video games are sold and played, becoming the dominant PC gaming platform with millions of concurrent users. Under Newell's leadership, Valve maintained a unique flat organizational structure and continued developing influential titles like "Portal," "The Orange Box," and "Dota 2." Beyond gaming, Newell has been instrumental in advancing virtual reality technology through the HTC Vive partnership.
