Francisco Sáenz Peña

Roque Sáenz Peña (1848-1914) was an Argentine politician and President of Argentina from 1910 to 1914 during a critical period of the nation's political development. Though often remembered by his middle name 'Roque,' his full name included Francisco. Sáenz Peña is most celebrated for championing the Sáenz Peña Law of 1912, which instituted universal male suffrage and the secret ballot in Argentina, transforming the nation's electoral system and expanding democratic participation dramatically. This legislation, considered progressive for its time, fundamentally altered Argentine politics by reducing the influence of the traditional oligarchy and allowing broader segments of the male population to participate in electoral processes. The law had profound consequences, enabling the election of Hipólito Yrigoyen of the Radical Civic Union in 1916, marking a significant shift in Argentine political history.
