Floyd Schmoe

Floyd Schmoe (September 1, 1905 – March 10, 2001) was an American logger, conservationist, and peace activist who lived a remarkable life dedicated to environmental stewardship and international goodwill. Known affectionately as 'Mr. Chips' for his advocacy of planting trees, Schmoe spent decades planting thousands of trees throughout the Pacific Northwest. Beyond his environmental work, he was deeply committed to peace and reconciliation, traveling to the Soviet Union during the Cold War to promote understanding and reduce tensions between the United States and USSR. Schmoe founded the Hiker's Club on Mount Rainier and was instrumental in establishing hiking trails and promoting outdoor conservation. His activism extended to advocating for Native American rights and environmental protection long before these causes became mainstream concerns. Schmoe lived simply and authentically, embodying his principles of environmental responsibility and human compassion. He was recognized for his contributions to conservation and peace with numerous awards and honors. Schmoe's life exemplified the possibility of individual action creating meaningful change, and he remained active in his causes well into his nineties. His legacy inspires environmental and peace activists to this day.
