Fidel Ramos
12th President of the Philippines, military reformer
Fidel Valdez Ramos (born March 18, 1928) is a Filipino military officer and politician who served as the 12th President of the Philippines from 1992 to 1998. Ramos had a distinguished military career, rising through the ranks of the Philippine military and eventually becoming Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. He was instrumental during the People Power Revolution of 1986, where he famously withdrew his support from President Ferdinand Marcos's regime, a decisive moment that helped topple the authoritarian government. As President, Ramos pursued a platform of reform and modernization, implementing economic liberalization policies and infrastructure development initiatives known as "Philippines 2000" and "Vision 2020." He also prioritized peace efforts with Muslim separatist movements in the southern Philippines, though these remained complex and ongoing challenges. Ramos was known for his efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and promote economic growth, though his presidency also faced significant criticisms regarding labor issues and oligarchic business practices. He served as a bridge figure in Philippine politics between the post-Marcos era and contemporary governance. After his presidency, Ramos remained active in public life and diplomatic roles, representing a pragmatic approach to governance in Philippine history.
