Farah Pahlavi
Last Empress of Iran, cultural patron, women's advocate
Farah Pahlavi (born October 14, 1938) is an Iranian-born former empress who served as the wife of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran. Born in Tehran, Farah was educated in Iran and Europe before marrying the Shah in 1959, becoming Empress in 1961 when he formally adopted the title. During her time as empress, she became renowned for her significant contributions to Iran's cultural development, founding and supporting numerous institutions including the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art and the Shiraz Arts Festival. She championed education, women's rights, and modern cultural developments, often serving as a progressive influence in her husband's court. A mother of four, she was also involved in charitable work and represented Iran on the international stage with grace and diplomatic acumen. Following the Islamic Revolution of 1979, Farah went into exile, living in various countries including the United States, France, and Egypt. She has continued her cultural and philanthropic work from abroad, writing memoirs and maintaining her legacy as an advocate for Iranian heritage and women's empowerment.
