Ewald von Kleist
July 20 plot conspirator against Hitler
Ewald von Kleist (1922–1945) was a German Wehrmacht officer who became one of the most active conspirators in the July 20, 1944 plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Born into a Prussian aristocratic family with a strong military tradition, von Kleist initially served in the Wehrmacht but grew increasingly disillusioned with Nazi ideology and the atrocities committed under Hitler's regime. He joined the resistance movement and played a crucial role as a liaison between military conspirators and civil resistance groups. When the bomb planted by Claus von Stauffenberg failed to kill Hitler, von Kleist was among the conspirators arrested in the subsequent purge. Despite torture and interrogation, he refused to betray fellow conspirators. He was court-martialed and executed by hanging on August 8, 1945, just weeks before the war's end. Von Kleist is remembered as a symbol of German resistance to Nazism and moral courage in the face of totalitarianism.
