Eugene V. Debs
Labor leader, socialist politician, workers' rights advocate
Eugene Victor Debs (1855–1926) was a legendary American labor organizer, socialist politician, and advocate for workers' rights who became one of the most influential figures in American labor history. Beginning his career as a railroad worker, Debs rose to prominence as the leader of the American Railway Union, organizing the Pullman Strike of 1894, which resulted in his imprisonment and radicalized his political views. He founded the Socialist Party of America and ran for U.S. President five times (1900-1920), receiving nearly six percent of the popular vote in 1912—the best performance by a socialist candidate in American history. Debs was imprisoned again in 1918 under the Espionage Act for his opposition to American involvement in World War I, yet he continued to command fervent support from his base. Known for his eloquent speeches and passionate advocacy for the working class, Debs articulated a vision of economic justice that challenged the capitalist status quo. Though his political movement ultimately failed to fundamentally transform American governance, Debs' influence on labor rights, workplace protections, and progressive politics remains substantial. He remains an iconic figure symbolizing the struggle for workers' dignity and economic equality.

Eugene
Greek origin
“Derived from the Greek Eugenios, meaning 'well-born' or 'noble,' combining eu- (good) and genos (family, birth). Eugene has been a name of philosophers, artists, and intellectuals, and carries understated sophistication. It's neither trendy nor dated, offering parents a masculine name with genuine classical roots and cross-cultural versatility.”
