Étienne-Jules Marey

Étienne-Jules Marey (1830–1904) was a French physiologist, inventor, and chronophotographer whose groundbreaking work bridged science and visual media. Initially trained in medicine, Marey became fascinated with recording and analyzing motion, particularly in living organisms. He developed numerous instruments to measure physiological processes, including the sphygmograph for recording pulse rates and the cardiograph for heart activity. His most significant contribution came with his pioneering chronophotography—a technique for capturing multiple successive images of moving subjects on a single photographic plate. Using high-speed photography, Marey documented the motion of animals, humans, and mechanical systems, creating detailed studies of locomotion and flight. His images of galloping horses and flying birds challenged conventional artistic representations and provided scientific insights into biomechanics. Marey's chronophotographic techniques directly anticipated motion picture cinematography and influenced the Lumière brothers' film development. His work inspired the Futurist art movement and shaped modern animation.
