Enrique Peña Nieto
Former President of Mexico, energy sector reforms
Enrique Peña Nieto (born July 20, 1966) is a Mexican politician who served as the 57th President of Mexico from 2012 to 2018. Born in Atlacomulco, State of Mexico, he initially served as Governor of Mexico State (2005-2011), where he gained recognition for his administrative work and media-savvy political style. As president, Peña Nieto pursued structural reforms in education, energy, and telecommunications, opening Mexico's oil sector to private investment for the first time in decades through the 2013 Energy Reform. His administration also implemented the Pact for Mexico, a bipartisan initiative aimed at economic growth and social development. However, his presidency was significantly shadowed by the handling of drug violence, particularly the disappearance of 43 students from Ayotzinapa in 2014, which became an international incident and symbol of government inadequacy. Despite some economic achievements and international diplomatic efforts, Peña Nieto's popularity declined substantially during his term. After leaving office, he faced legal scrutiny and eventually faced money laundering investigations. His presidency remains a complex and contested legacy in Mexican political history.

Thinking about the name
Enrique
Germanic origin
“The Spanish form of Heinrich, meaning 'estate ruler' or 'home ruler,' derived from Germanic roots combining 'heim' (home) and 'ric' (ruler). Enrique has been borne by Spanish royalty, Latin American leaders, and cultural icons, making it both regal and deeply connected to Hispanic heritage.”
