Emer de Vattel

Emer de Vattel (1714–1767) was a Swiss jurist, diplomat, and legal theorist whose contributions to international law profoundly influenced the development of modern diplomacy and state relations. Born in Couvet, Neuchâtel, Vattel served as a diplomat representing the Elector of Saxony and later his native principality. His most enduring work, 'The Law of Nations' (1758), systematized principles of international conduct and became a cornerstone of international legal theory. Written partly as a response to Hugo Grotius's earlier work, Vattel's treatise emphasized the sovereignty of states and their rights and duties in relation to one another. His ideas on neutrality, treaties, and the conduct of warfare significantly shaped how nations interact legally and diplomatically. Though writing in the context of 18th-century European politics, Vattel's frameworks continue to influence international law and diplomacy centuries later, making him one of history's most influential legal minds.
